Santa Fe

I can't believe that a whole month has gone by and I haven't posted a word about our trip to Santa Fe.  We went over Memorial Day, for Pete's Sake!  It was just a quick trip, too quick I think.

We flew to Albuquerque  on Thursday and met our friends John and Cheryl.  The first order of business was lunch and we had really tasty New Mexican food.  You must decide if you are a Red Chile Sauce or a Green Chile Sauce person because they sauce a lot of things.  I'm really not ready to commit yet, I need more tasting time.  We stayed with our friend Evelyn and her mother in Los Alamos so we began heading in that direction.  You could see the mountains from everywhere.  Fabulous.  I think I am a person that likes to be able to see the mountains.  We stopped at the Pueblo San Ildefonso and saw some of the pottery.   They have a very unique style and the pottery is all black.  We had a delicious dinner and visit, then off to bed.

Evelyn took us to Banderlier National Monument on Friday.  We took the 1 1/2 mile hike and saw the ruins of the kivas, homes, and the rock paintings.

These are some of the homes that were carved into the rocks.  Lunch included french fries with a green chile sauce.  I told you they sauced a lot of things.  We stopped at the San Ildefonso Pueblo again on the way home and this time, we were able to wander around and visit the museum.  We watched as one woman worked on preparing one of her pots for firing.

Our next day was spent in Santa Fe.  The first stop there was the Santa Fe Quilting shop.  Now that was a fun place.  David and John might have been a little bored, but Cheryl and Evelyn both quilt too, so I was able to take my time and look at everything.  We went to the downtown area next and wandered to lunch.  I finally decided on the piece of pottery that I wanted.  It was made by a Santa Clara potter but in the black style.

Lunch was a famous Green Chile Cheeseburger (there's that green sauce again).  There are websites devoted to the hunt for the perfect Green Chile Cheeseburger.  Who knew?  Mine was quite tasty and I found some packets of green chile sauce to bring home.  I haven't tried it yet, we've been grilling pizzas instead of hamburgers.   We spent the afternoon wandering around downtown seeing the local art works.  The rugs were incredible.

Our last day was spent driving to the Taos Pueblo.  A really fascinating place.  These homes have been lived in for over 1,000 years and they are still being lived in today.  We took a tour of the village and sampled fruit pies fresh out of the ovens.   There is a crystal clear stream running through the center of the pueblo and it is surrounded by mountains.

Lunch was blue corn cheese enchiladas, this time with red chile sauce.  We stopped in the city of Taos and wandered there for a while.  I found a new travel purse and we stopped at a yarn shop.  The shop keeper was not a knitter, but she had worked as a designer before and knew a lot about how to make things fit properly.  It would have been a fun place to take a class or two.  They dye most of their yarns and so, I have enough to make some fingerless gloves.

We had to leave on Monday, but I will definitely go back.
