It seems that I was the only person left that hasn't read

I really enjoyed the book but it very sad.   A reporter who has lost his job is hired to find a girl who disappeared many years ago.  He hires a researcher who is somewhat dysfunctional to help him and they almost get killed in the process.  It is also about how abusive men can be toward women.  Fortunately, two of the women actually manage to escape their abusers and not all the men in the story are evil.  It was a good story and I will definitely read the other books in this series.
